We began to setup our 2016 display during the first week of October believing that we had allowed ourselves plenty of time, however, despite devoting all of our available time to the project we found that the last two weeks (prior to the "Official Lights On" on December 11th) was quite a rush.

From the beginning of October until December 11th it rained on 24 days and we had a couple of days of high temperatures. On the rainy days we concentrated on checking the lights and other display items to ensure that everything was ready when the rain stopped, or did our shopping and other jobs that needed to be done.

By "Lights On" the display was ready but, during the early hours of 28th December, there was a severe storm with very strong winds and we received over 100mm of rain in about 4 hours causing damage to our display, as well as a power outage which lasted for 14 hours, luckily it was restored in time for the evenings display.

The morning following the storm we packed up the damaged items,
checked the display for water damage and had the rest of the display ready in time
for that evenings display.

Photos of our yard displays.

Our yard display covers our whole front yard and took 9 weeks to set up.
First Peg prepared the garden itself, then she set out the display, and our sons put up the roof display.
I help where I can, however, due to my health, my input is limited.

When we began our display, in the1980's, yard displays were not available, so we made our own, Peg sketched the characters so I could cut them out and then she painted them.

Photos of our inside displays, 2016

which can be viewed through our windows

Our window displays have always been a favourite with our many visitors, they were inspired by Peg's childhood memories of John Martin's (a former large retail store in Adelaide) Christmas Display Windows .
It took Peg about 10 days to setup this year's display and one window's display had to be dismantled after "lights out" and setup again each evening to give us some living space during the day.
The displays are setup at a low level to ensure that small children can see them without having to be lifted up, and each display has a moving feature to capture the children's attention.
The windows contain many special features and it is amazing to hear the excitement as children (and adults) find a piece of special interest to them, and then they make a special effort to come and talk to us about what they have discovered in the displays, and tell us why it was special to them.

We often have people telling us that their parents had bought them to see our display as a child and how it has become a family tradition to bring their own children to see it each year, some with their parents making three generations enjoying the lights. They also say how they enjoy sharing their childhood memories of our displays and the lights with their own children. These random comments make us realise that the time and effort that it takes us to present the display is well worth the effort.
